Merewethers Buch geht ein auf die Frage, welche Bevölkerungsgruppen der
Kolonie Indien als besonders "kriegstüchtig" gelten könnten.
Eine ähnliche Frage stellte der französische Berufsoffizier Charles
Mangin bereits 1910 in Bezug auf die Bevölkerung des französischen
Kolonialreiches in Afrika.
Bei der Beantwortung der Frage nach "kriegstüchtigen kolonialen
Bevölkerungsgruppen/Rassen" teilen sowohl Mangin wie Merewether z.T.
rassistische Anschauungen ihrer Zeit.
Ein Problem beim Einsatz der US-Truppen im Ersten Weltkrieg war die Tatsache, dass schwarze US-Soldaten Seite an Seite mit weissen US-Soldaten kämpften; bei ihrer Heimkehr in die USA nach dem Krieg galten die Schwarzen jedoch in den Südstaaten, wo Segregation und Rassendiskriminierung herrschte, weiterhin als minderwertig.

ein Besuch des Soldatenfriedhofs
Zossen-Wünsdorf in der Nähe von Berlin.
Hier sind indische Soldaten beigesetzt, die als alliierte
Kriegsgefangene während des Ersten Weltkrieges in der Gefangenschaft
in Deutschland verstorben sind.
